A Healthy Home: How Rainwater Harvesting Transformed One Family's Water Supply

Ahmedabad resident Ramendu Parikh shares his success story of rainwater harvesting for a healthier and sustainable future

Access to clean and safe drinking water is essential for leading a healthy life. However, with the increasing population and industrialization, the quality of our drinking water is deteriorating day by day. In such a scenario, rainwater harvesting offers an effective and sustainable solution to ensure the availability of clean and healthy water.

One such success story of rainwater harvesting is that of Ramendu Parikh, who took the initiative to prioritize the quality of water consumed by his family. His decision led him to discover the benefits of rainwater harvesting, and with the help of Furaat, he installed a filtration module and a rainwater storage tank of 35,000 litres.

The overflow from the tank was directed towards their tube well, which significantly raised its water level and reduced its TDS levels by diluting it along. The filtered rainwater stored in the tank contained all the necessary minerals and had an optimum pH, which had detoxifying effects and promoted healthy digestion.

"By implementing rainwater harvesting in our home, we not only ensure the availability of clean and healthy water but also reduce our dependence on expensive and unsustainable sources of water. It gives us a sense of self-sufficiency and responsibility towards the environment." - Ramendu Parikh, Ahmedabad

Ramendu and his family also adapted the ancient Indian concept of storing the harvested rainwater in a copper vessel (Nala) in the evening hours before drinking or using it the next day. According to Ayurveda, the water stored this way is called 'Tamra Jal' and it helps balance all three Doshas (Kapha, Vata, and Pitta). Drinking water stored for 8-10 hours in a copper vessel is very beneficial for health as the metal copper has electromagnetic energy, which is called Prana Shakti.

Ramendu and his family have been welcoming visitors to their residence for many years to spread awareness about rainwater harvesting and the health benefits of drinking water stored in copper vessels.
