Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) implemented a city-wide rainwater harvesting program with the primary objective of groundwater recharge and sustainable water management.
The city had over 1,000 existing single-phase borewells, presenting a strong opportunity to integrate decentralized rainwater harvesting. Under this initiative, work was awarded on 11th July 2022 to install rainwater harvesting units across 660 borewells, out of which 630+ units have already been successfully installed.
The system captures rainwater directly from building terraces by connecting down-take pipes to nearby borewells. In between, precast filtration units with first-flush mechanisms ensure that only clean, silt-free water is diverted for recharge or storage. This prevents wastage of rooftop runoff, which previously flowed onto roads.
660 targeted installations
Integration with existing borewell infrastructure
Scientific filtration with first-flush system
Funded under SJMMSVY (₹2 Cr allocation)
Estimated recharge potential: 52 million liters annually
Project duration: 12 months + 2 years O&M
Significant improvement in groundwater levels
Reduction in waterlogging in narrow streets
Conversion of rooftop runoff into a valuable resource
Potential for water credits under UCR frameworkJMC plans to expand this initiative to private properties under a public participation model, making it a scalable and replicable solution for urban water sustainability.
